My Fabulous Fig Tree

After a two week delay due to an outrageously unseasonal snow event, as well as my own health problems, This past Saturday my father, a friend, and me planted a brand new fig tree in my backyard!  Huzzah!  It really is sort of interesting how this all came about in the first place, as I really had no plans to plant a tree in my backyard until about a month and a half ago.

When I first bought my house, one of the best things about the back yard was that it was small, rectangular, and basically empty of any obstructions.  I saw that as a benefit because I assumed I would be mowing it myself and that sort of yard is nothing to mow.  Well that benefit pretty much went away since I ended up using a lawn service, and didn't have to brave the yard work on my own.

Even so, I never really put any thought into using up any of the yard space for anything in particular.  That all changed when I went over to my father's new house for the first time.  He was showing me around his backyard, and the year before he had planted a fig tree in his back yard (as well as some blueberry plants).

I have loved figs for a long time, but never really looked into cultivating them or even it this was a good region for it.  It never crossed my mind.  A did a quick read online about growing fig trees, and it turned out that they are extremely easy to care for, and require little maintence.  Also, they will physically adapt to pretty much any space you plant it in.  This was perfect!

So last Saturday we put this puppy in the ground, and probably sometime next season, I'll start getting little baby figs.  Yay!
